Flag's Square

Flag's Square — Sheshi i Flamurit in Albanian — is the civic heart of Vlorë and the site of the 1912 Declaration of Independence. The square is large and tree-lined, with the Independence Monument at its centre: a bronze group depicting Ismail Qemali raising the Albanian flag, surrounded by a circle of national heroes. It's a gathering place for locals in the evenings and the scene of celebrations on 28 November each year.

The building where independence was actually declared still stands on the square and now houses the Museum of National Independence. The square connects to the long palm-lined promenade that runs along the bay — one of the best evening walks in Albania.

A story
It was in the building on this square that Ismail Qemali proclaimed Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire on 28 November 1912, raising a double-headed eagle flag that became the symbol of the new nation. The date, called Dita e Flamurit (Flag Day), remains Albania's most important national holiday.
