Kayan Berd

Ruined hill fortress above the Debed valley, reached by a rough path near Haghpat.

Kayan Berd is a ruined fortress above the Debed valley, near Haghpat, with rough stone remains and a commanding view over one of northern Armenia's most rewarding cultural corridors. It is less polished than the monasteries below, but that rawness is part of the appeal.

The path can be rough, so treat it as a short hike rather than a casual roadside stop. If you have already seen Haghpat and Sanahin, Kayan Berd adds the defensive side of the valley's history and gives you a fine excuse to look back across the landscape.
