Havuts Tar Monastery

Havuts Tar is a ruined medieval monastery on a promontory above the Azat River, across the gorge from Garni. Built mainly in the 12th to 14th centuries, it was severely damaged in the 1679 earthquake that also destroyed the temple and has been in a state of picturesque ruin since, with partial rebuilding in the early 18th century and some conservation work in the 20th.

The ruins include the remains of two churches, a gavit (vestibule), guest chambers, and a fortified wall with carved relief decoration and inscriptions. The monastery is in better condition than it looks from a distance, and the gorge views from the promontory are spectacular. It is reached by a 30-minute hike from the village of Goght, following the Azat river valley.

A story
Havuts Tar is visible from the Garni Temple across the gorge — a ruined monastery clinging to a promontory on the opposite wall of the Azat valley. Standing at the temple and looking across, you can see why the medieval monks chose this site: it is defensible, dramatic, and utterly removed from the world. Getting there requires going back down to the valley floor and up the other side, which adds 90 minutes to your visit but is worth the effort.
