Garni's main attraction is the Hellenistic temple — the only standing pagan temple in the former Soviet Union — but the gorge below it and the ruins of Havuts Tar monastery across the valley make for a full and rewarding day. Most visitors combine Garni with the nearby cave monastery of Geghard, which together make one of the finest excursions from Yerevan.
