Sourb Arakelots

The larger of the two 9th-century churches that make up the monastery, Sourb Arakelots (Church of Holy Apostles) is built in the plain, severe style typical of early Armenian stone architecture. There is almost no ornament on the exterior — the beauty is in the proportions and in the material itself, a dark volcanic tufa that turns reddish in low light.

The churchyard around Sourb Arakelots contains a collection of khachkars — Armenian cross-stones, intricately carved with geometric lacework patterns. Khachkars are among the most distinctive art forms in Armenian culture; these examples are centuries old and worth a slow look.
