Sourb Astvatsatsin

The smaller companion to Sourb Arakelots, Sourb Astvatsatsin (Church of Holy Mother of God) stands just a few metres away. Together the two churches form the complete monastery — Sevanavank at its founding had more buildings, but these are what survived the centuries and the Soviet era.

Sourb Astvatsatsin rewards a closer look at the stone relief work on the façade. The carving is restrained but finely executed, with decorative bands around the windows and door. Inside, the space is intimate — dark, cool, and simply furnished with candles that visitors are expected to buy and light.
