Meghri River Valley

A short walk down the river to where it meets the Aras

The Meghriget, the small river that gives the town its name, flows down a steep narrow valley from the mountains north of town and joins the Aras (Arax) River about a kilometre south of Meghri. A pleasant short walk follows the riverbank from the lower part of town down to the confluence — orchards on either side (the apricots, pomegranates, and figs of Meghri are famous in Armenia), shaded pools where local kids swim in summer, and at the end the view of the Aras itself.

The Iranian border runs down the middle of the Aras, so look but do not wade. The walk takes about an hour each way and is best done in the early morning or late afternoon when the heat eases.
