Surb Astvatsatsin Church

17th-century Armenian church with carved stone iconography

The Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) is the main religious building of upper Meghri and dates from the late 17th century. The squat three-naved basilica sits on the upper slopes of the town with a tile roof and weathered tuff walls; the bell tower is later, added in the 19th century. Inside, you can still see fragments of original wall paintings — rare in Armenian churches of this date — depicting saints and Old Testament scenes in a style heavily influenced by Persian miniatures.

The church is sometimes locked but the caretaker lives in a small house nearby and will open it on request for a small donation. The carved khachkars (stone crosses) in the surrounding cemetery are worth a close look — Meghri's khachkar carvers were among the best in southern Armenia.
