Jermuk

High Armenian spa town where mineral springs, waterfalls, and Soviet sanatoriums sit above the Arpa gorge.

Jermuk is a mountain spa town at around 2,100 metres in Vayots Dzor province, known for its mineral springs. The branded Jermuk mineral water is sold across Armenia and the region. The town was developed during the Soviet era as a health resort, and the infrastructure retains some of that sanatorium character.

The setting is beautiful — alpine meadows, waterfalls (the Arpa River cascade in the gorge below town is the main attraction), and clean air. There is a gallery of mineral water taps in the town centre where visitors can fill bottles and taste different springs. A cable car crosses the gorge.

Jermuk makes a good overnight stop if you are travelling between Yerevan and the monasteries of Syunik, or if you want to break up a loop through Vayots Dzor. The Armenia Spa hotel is the main upmarket option; there are also smaller guesthouses.

Getting There

Jermuk is about 230 kilometres south of Yerevan by road — roughly 3 hours driving, including the climb from the Ararat plain up into Vayots Dzor. The route goes through Ararat, Yeghegnadzor, and then up a winding mountain road. Marshrutka minibuses run from Yerevan's Kilikia bus station; the journey can take 3.5–4 hours. Hiring a taxi or car for the day is practical and allows stops at monasteries and viewpoints along the way. Jermuk is often combined with visits to Noravank monastery near Yeghegnadzor.
