Kapan

Southern Armenian mining city below Mount Khustup, with fortress ruins and forested monasteries nearby.

Kapan is a working southern Armenian city wedged into a narrow valley below Mount Khustup. It is not polished, and the mining industry is part of the view, but the setting is dramatic: steep green and brown slopes rise almost from the streets, with high Syunik history scattered in the hills around town.

The best reason to use Kapan as a base is the combination of mountain and medieval stone. Mount Khustup dominates the skyline and draws serious hikers, while Vahanavank gives a quieter monastery visit in the forest above the Voghji valley.

Kapan also sits close to old fortress country. Baghaberd is rougher to reach than the famous monastery stops farther north, but that is part of its pull. This is a good page for travelers already committed to Syunik rather than a simple day trip from Yerevan.
