The Rote Wand sits in the small hamlet of Zug, a couple of kilometres above Lech, and is reached either by ski or by horse-drawn sleigh from the village. The hotel restaurant has held a Michelin star for years; the more atmospheric option is the Schualhus next door, which serves a fondue-and-grill menu in a series of historic wood-panelled stube rooms.
Dinner here is one of the set-piece experiences of an Arlberg ski week, and the sleigh ride back to Lech under the stars is part of the appeal. Book early and dress warmly for the ride.
