St. Anton is the largest and best-known of the Arlberg resorts — a Tyrolean village strung along the floor of the Rosanna valley, dominated above by the 2,811-metre Valluga. The Wagner-era station building sits at one end of the main street and a handful of large ski hotels at the other; in between is a long, mostly traffic-free Fußgängerzone of bars, sports shops, and bakeries.
The character is sporty rather than chic — St. Anton attracts skiers who actually want to ski, with a reputation for tough piste, steep off-piste, and the most aggressive après-ski scene in the Alps (the Mooserwirt and the Krazy Kanguruh on the way back from Galzig are institutions). It is busier and rowdier than Lech, and much cheaper.
