Schloss Gayenhofen

Medieval castle overlooking Bludenz old town, now used for events

Schloss Gayenhofen sits on a low ridge above the old town, close enough to walk to but elevated enough to give the roofline of Bludenz a proper backdrop. The castle dates in its earliest form to the 13th century, though what stands today is largely a post-medieval reconstruction. It is not a museum — the interior is used for civic functions and private events — but the exterior and the small square in front of it are freely accessible.

The real reason to come here is the vantage point. The castle terrace looks south over the old town and west toward the Walgau, with the Rätikon peaks visible on clear days. It takes about ten minutes on foot from the main pedestrian zone, mostly uphill along a well-signed path. Worth combining with a walk through the old town below, where the painted facades along the main street give a good sense of what Bludenz looked like before the railway arrived.

A story
The castle changed hands repeatedly through the Middle Ages before the bishops of Chur took possession in the 15th century. The name Gayenhofen — derived from an old German word for a fortified estate — predates the current building, which was substantially rebuilt after a fire in the 17th century.
