The Bräugasthof occupies one of the oldest buildings in the village, a 15th-century house on the Seestrasse with a small lakeside terrace that is the most coveted seating in Hallstatt. The cooking is unfussy Salzkammergut fare done properly: locally-caught char (Saibling) blue-cooked or pan-fried with brown butter and almonds, beef goulash, a respectable Kaiserschmarrn.
Service is correct rather than warm and the prices reflect the location, but the terrace at sunset with a glass of Grüner Veltliner in hand is one of the great Austrian moments. Book ahead in summer; the lakeside tables are gone weeks in advance. Closed Mondays in low season.
