Hallstatt is small enough to walk in twenty minutes, but the sights warrant a full day or two. The classic photograph is taken from the small viewing platform on the lakeshore north of the village. The salt mine and the funicular up the Salzberg are the half-day excursion, the parish church and its famous bone house should not be missed, and the Dachstein ice caves across the lake at Obertraun fill the second day.
