Rosengartenschlucht

The Rosengartenschlucht cuts down through the centre of Imst — a narrow, dramatic gorge carved by the Schinderbach that drops over 150 metres through pink and ochre limestone, with waterfalls, footbridges and walkways pinned to the rock walls. The full walk takes about two hours and climbs from the town centre up to the Blue Grotto and on to Hoch-Imst, where you can take the gondola down and close the loop.

It is one of the few Alpine gorge walks that starts and ends in town, which makes it perfect for an afternoon. Wear shoes with grip — the path is wet in places, even in high summer. Closed in winter when the upper sections ice over.

A story
The gorge owes its name not to roses but to the iron-rich red walls — the German Rosengarten ('rose garden') was an old Alpine name for any rust-coloured rock face. The path through it was first opened to the public in 1899, and parts of the original boardwalk are still in use.
