The Alter Platz, just north of Neuer Platz, is the older and prettier of Klagenfurt's two great squares. It is essentially a long, narrow market street, lined with arcaded Renaissance and Baroque houses painted in pastel colours, and bookended by the Trinity Column at one end and the Landhaus at the other.
A weekly market still fills it on Thursday and Saturday mornings, but at any time it is the most pleasant place in town to sit with a coffee. The Haus zur Goldenen Gans, with its painted facade, and the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) are worth a second look. In December the square becomes one of the more agreeable Christmas markets in southern Austria.
