The shores of the Wörthersee are a string of resorts within minutes of the centre by S-Bahn or bus: Pörtschach, Velden and the peninsula of Maria Wörth, all with their own beaches and cafes. Hochosterwitz Castle, twenty kilometres north-east, is the great picture-book fortress of Carinthia and easily a half-day visit.
Further afield, Villach and the dramatic mountains of the Karnische Region are forty minutes' drive west. The hilltop pilgrimage church of Maria Saal and the Roman excavations at Magdalensberg sit ten and twenty kilometres north respectively, on the broad Zollfeld plain. Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, is just over an hour away — a satisfying cross-border day trip if you have the time.
