Eating Out

Linz has a good range of restaurants for a city its size, with both traditional Austrian cooking and a broader international selection. The local speciality is the Linzer Torte — a latticed pastry with a redcurrant or raspberry filling over a shortcrust base flavoured with ground almonds and spices. It is considered the oldest known cake recipe in the world, with a recipe dating from 1653. You will find it in every bakery and café in the city.

The restaurant scene concentrates around the Hauptplatz and the Landstraße pedestrian shopping street. The area around the Ars Electronica Center on the north bank is better for contemporary international food.
