The Landestheater Linz is Upper Austria's principal performing arts venue, a theatre complex that stages opera, drama, and contemporary dance across two main performance spaces. The main house dates from the 19th century but has been substantially renovated; there is also a more experimental Schauspielhaus attached to the complex. The resident opera ensemble is one of Austria's stronger regional companies and presents a serious programme through the season.
The theatre's reputation has grown considerably in recent decades, and the opera productions in particular attract Vienna visitors who find the programming more adventurous than at the Staatsoper. Tickets are considerably cheaper than in Vienna and the house is smaller, which means most seats have good sightlines. The season runs from September to June.
