Radstadt sits at the foot of the Radstädter Tauern, and the surrounding region is easy to explore by car or train. The Alpine market town of Schladming, 20 km east, is the largest base in the Dachstein region. Salzburg is an hour by train, and the spa town of Bad Gastein 45 minutes by car over the Tauern. In summer, the panoramic Tauernstrasse — the old high road over the pass — is one of the great Alpine drives.
