Radstadt is a small medieval walled town at 858 metres in the Salzburg region, tucked between the Dachstein massif and the Radstädter Tauern. The town received its charter in 1289 and still wears its history on its sleeve: intact city walls and round towers, a late-Romanesque parish church, and a gothic light column all survive in the compact old centre.
In winter, Radstadt is a gateway to the Ski Amadé network, one of Austria's largest connected ski areas. The slopes above town suit intermediates well, and cross-country trails run through the valley. In summer the same landscape opens up for hiking, mountain biking, and golfing, with the Tauern mountain passes providing dramatic high-altitude routes.
The town is small enough to walk end to end in ten minutes, which is part of its appeal. It is a practical, unpretentious base rather than a resort village, with a handful of restaurants and bars clustered around the Stadtplatz. If you want big-resort nightlife, head to Schladming down the valley; if you want quiet mountains and a medieval backdrop, Radstadt is your place.
