The Dachstein Glacier is the southernmost glacier in Austria and one of the few that supports year-round skiing. The ski area is small by Alpine standards — a couple of dozen kilometres of pistes — but it operates from October to May and stays open in summer for training teams.
A short marked path leads across the glacier from the cable car top station to a Catholic chapel built into the ice. The glacier is retreating fast: figures show it has lost more than 20% of its mass in the past three decades. See it while it lasts.
