Cycling the Kaiser Valley

The valleys around St. Johann are well set up for cycling, with a network of marked routes ranging from easy valley-floor rides to demanding climbs into the high passes. The most popular route runs east along the Leukental valley toward Kirchdorf and beyond, following the Kitzbüheler Ache river on mostly flat paths through traditional Tyrolean farming villages.

For more ambitious cyclists, the Wilder Kaiser loop — circling the dramatic limestone massif of the Wilder Kaiser — combines mountain scenery with manageable gradients over about 60 kilometres of mixed terrain. Bike hire is available in the town centre and at several hotels; electric bikes have made the hillier routes accessible to most fitness levels.

In winter, some of these valley routes are groomed for cross-country skiing (Langlauf), a popular alternative to downhill among visitors who prefer a quieter time in the mountains.

A story
The Wilder Kaiser — the "wild emperor" — is named for its dramatic rocky towers that look, from below, like a crown. The range is a popular rock climbing destination as well as a hiking area, and its north face, rising almost vertically from the valley floor near Ellmau, is one of the most impressive natural walls in the Alps.
