The historic centre is compact and best seen on foot — most of the major sights are within a 15-minute walk of the Stadtplatz. The train station is about 800 metres south of the centre; buses link the station to the centre, to Christkindl, and to the surrounding villages.
For day trips into the Nationalpark Kalkalpen and the Steyr valley, a car is useful. The Steyrtal-Museumsbahn covers the lower valley in summer. Local taxis are easy to find; bike rental is available near the station.
