Michaelerkirche

Across the Enns from the old town, St Michael's was begun in 1635 as a Jesuit church and finished in 1671 in vigorous early Baroque. Twin towers flank the facade and the interior is whitewashed and luminous, with a deep barrel vault and a number of original altarpieces.

The Bürgerspitalkirche next door, endowed by Queen Elisabeth in the early 14th century, is much older and worth a glance for context. Together with the parish church across the river they form Steyr's three big religious set pieces; the view back from the Michaelerplatz to the Stadtplatz is one of the postcard angles.
