Schloss Lamberg

Schloss Lamberg crowns the rocky spur above the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers. The medieval Styraburg, first recorded in 980, was the seat of the Margraves of Styria; after a fire in 1727 it was rebuilt in restrained Baroque, with formal courtyards and a long gallery overlooking the rivers.

The castle is now in public hands and used for exhibitions and concerts. Parts are open to visit; the gardens and courtyards are freely accessible. The view from the castle terraces over the old town and the rivers below is among the best in upper Austria.

A story
Schloss Lamberg sits on the same crag, then called the Styraburg, that gave the neighbouring province of Styria its name. The current Baroque palace was rebuilt in 1727 after a town fire and houses a library of over 11,000 books, including incunabula and early prints.
