Neubau, Vienna's 7th district, is the city's creative heart — a grid of Biedermeier streets behind the MuseumsQuartier that fills with independent shops, design studios, galleries, cafés and bars. It is where young Vienna comes to browse and linger, denser and more bohemian than the grand Innere Stadt across the Ring, and small enough to wander in an afternoon.
Neubaugasse is the spine, lined with concept stores, vintage dealers, record shops and the kind of small boutiques that have largely vanished from the main shopping streets. The side lanes hold the cobbled enclave of Spittelberg and a steady supply of coffee houses old and new. On the first Saturday of many months, Neubaugasse closes to traffic for a street fair.
The district wears its history lightly: imperial-era apartment blocks now house tattoo parlours and natural-wine bars, and the MuseumsQuartier on its eastern edge supplies the big-ticket culture. Come to shop, eat and drink rather than to tick off monuments.
