The "Spoorwegkathedraal" — railway cathedral — opened in 1905 and is one of the great surviving early-twentieth-century terminals. The vaulted train shed of glass and steel is set above a domed waiting hall in marble and bronze, with the platforms now arranged on four levels. The lowest level was added in 2007 when the high-speed line was extended; engineers tunnelled new platforms underneath without disturbing the historic structure above.
Even if you are not catching a train, walk through the main hall — the architectural drama is best seen looking up from the centre of the marble floor. The station ranked in Newsweek's list of the world's most beautiful stations in 2009 and has been on most similar lists since.
