Getting Around

The historic centre of Antwerp is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes. Most major sights — the Cathedral, Grote Markt, Plantin-Moretus, Rubenshuis, Vrijdagmarkt — are within this circle. Walking is the default.

For longer trips — to Het Zuid, the MAS, the Diamond District, Zurenborg — trams and the metro (De Lijn) run frequently. The pre-metro system runs underground in the centre and emerges as surface trams in the outer districts. A single ride costs around €2.50; a day pass €7.50, both available at machines or the De Lijn shop.

Bikes are the local mode of transport. The Velo bike-share system has stations across the city; a day pass is cheap. The cycle infrastructure is excellent. Pickpockets work the tourist routes — keep an eye on bags on busy trams.

The Sint-Anna pedestrian tunnel under the Scheldt connects to Linkeroever with the original 1933 wooden escalators — worth doing at least once for the experience.
