Sint-Anna Tunnel

1933 pedestrian tunnel under the Scheldt with original wooden escalators

Address Sint-Jansvliet, 2000 Antwerpen

A 1933 pedestrian and cyclist tunnel running 572 metres under the Scheldt, linking the city centre to Linkeroever (the Left Bank). The tunnel is mostly an unremarkable tiled corridor lit by yellow lamps. The extraordinary detail is the wooden escalators at each end — original 1933 installations of slatted wood, still in daily operation and the last working wooden escalators in the world.

Walking the tunnel takes about ten minutes; the Left Bank end has the best panorama back across the river at the old city. Particularly good at sunset, when the cathedral and city skyline are lit by the low sun. Free, open 24 hours.

A story
The wooden escalators down into the tunnel were installed in 1933 and are still in daily operation — they are the last working wooden escalators in the world. The tunnel itself is 572 metres long and runs nine metres below the riverbed.
