The Grote Markt is Bruges at its most theatrical: a broad medieval market square ringed by stepped gables, cafe terraces, and the great belfry rising over the southern side. It is busy and unapologetically touristed, but it is still the place where the old city clicks into focus. Come early for space, or late in the day when the facades warm up and the square feels less like a stage set.
