Ghent has a genuinely good restaurant scene, fuelled by its large student population and the Flemish tradition of eating well. The area around the Graslei and Korenlei, and the streets behind the Vrijdagmarkt, have a high density of restaurants at every price level. Ghent is also notably vegetarian-friendly — it introduced a weekly "vegetarian day" in 2009 and the culture stuck.
