The Van der Weyenpoort is the best-surviving example of Lier's original medieval city gates, a stocky 14th-century stone tower that once guarded the southern approach to the town. It stands at the edge of the old town close to the Nete river, and gives a good impression of how the medieval defensive circuit looked before the walls were largely demolished in later centuries.
The gate is not open to visitors inside, but walking past it on the way to or from the Beguinage takes only a few extra minutes and adds historical context. The narrow streets around it are among the most picturesque in town.
