Mons Memorial Museum

The Mons Memorial Museum covers the city's experience of both World Wars, with particular depth on the First World War. Mons saw the first major engagement between British and German forces in August 1914, and then again on the last morning of the war in November 1918 — a four-year circle that the museum documents with archival material, personal testimonies, weapons, uniforms, and maps.

The museum is well-designed and bilingual (French and English), which reflects the historical connection between Mons and the British forces who fought here. The area around the city is dotted with Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries and memorials; the museum makes a good starting point for exploring them. Allow two hours.

A story
Mons holds the distinction of being both the site of the first and the last major battle fought by the British Expeditionary Force in WWI. On 11 November 1918, the 3rd Canadian Division entered Mons just hours before the Armistice came into effect — the last shots of the Western Front were fired in streets that were first fought over in August 1914.
