The Van Gogh House in Cuesmes is modest, and that is exactly why it works. Vincent van Gogh lived here during his Borinage period, before the painter of sunflowers and wheatfields had fully emerged, and the house keeps the focus on that uncertain, formative time.
Do not expect a major art museum. The visit is about biography and atmosphere: a small miner's village setting, a few rooms, and the sense of an artist still searching for his subject and vocation.
