Walraversijde, now presented as part of the Raversyde heritage domain, is one of the best historical excursions from Ostend. The site combines reconstructions of a medieval fishing settlement with the much harder military landscape of bunkers, batteries, and trenches from the Atlantic Wall.
That range is what makes it worthwhile: you can move from the daily life of a vanished North Sea village to the coastal defences of two world wars in a single visit. It is outside the immediate city centre, but the trip adds real context to Ostend's seafront, which has always been both a leisure coast and a strategic edge.
