Hautes Fagnes

Belgium's highest point — open moorland, peat bogs, wooden boardwalks.

The high plateau nature reserve to the east of Spa is one of Belgium's most distinctive landscapes — open moorland and peat bogs at around 700 metres elevation, criss-crossed by wooden boardwalks that keep walkers out of the mud. In winter it receives more snow than almost anywhere else in Belgium; in summer the heather blooms purple. The Signal de Botrange, at 694 metres, is the highest point in the country, which is not saying much but the emptiness of the landscape up there is genuinely striking. The reserve is about 20 kilometres from Spa by road.
