Spa's most celebrated iron-rich natural spring, free to drink

The most celebrated of Spa's natural springs, housed in a handsome 19th-century hall in the town centre. The iron-rich water bubbles up cold — the springs are naturally carbonated and cool, not hot — and you can drink it free from a tap at the entrance. The taste is unmistakably mineral. Inside, a large painting of Peter the Great dominates the room, commemorating his 1717 visit.

A story
The spring is named after Tsar Peter the Great of Russia, who visited Spa in 1717 to drink the waters and reportedly consumed them in impressive quantities. His endorsement helped cement Spa's reputation across Europe.
