Ypres (Ieper in Dutch) is 15km east and the obvious companion to a visit to Wervik. The In Flanders Fields Museum is the best introduction to the First World War in Belgium, and the Menin Gate — where the Last Post is sounded every evening at 8pm — is one of the most moving memorial sites in Europe. Kortrijk is 20km north by car or train, with a handsome medieval belfry, a good market square, and the Broeltorens on the river. Lille, just across the border in France, is around 20km southwest and offers a proper French city day: excellent food markets, the Palais des Beaux-Arts (one of France's best provincial art museums), and a very different atmosphere from the Flemish towns nearby.
