Lys River Cycling

The Lys valley is one of the flattest and most pleasant cycling routes in Flanders. The towpath runs along the river through a wide, quiet landscape of French and Belgian border country — the kind of riding where you cover ground easily and the scenery settles into a gentle rhythm. Wervik sits on the LF5a route, also marked as La Lys, which links Ghent to the French border and beyond. It is a natural lunch stop for cyclists heading east or west along the river. If you are coming from elsewhere for the day, Wervik is worth a short detour off the main route to visit the tobacco museum before rejoining the towpath.
