The cafe terraces on the central Markt around the Egmont statue are the natural place for a drink. A handful of older estaminets — Flemish brown bars with bare-wood floors, lottery tickets, and crates of glass bottles — survive on the side streets, especially around the church. The Flemish Ardennes is also serious beer country: every village has its own brewery or beer cafe, and Zottegem's bars stock the lambics and golden ales from the surrounding hills.
