Apparition Hill (Podbrdo)

The rocky hillside in the hamlet of Bijakovici where the original 1981 visions were reported. A rough, stony track climbs up through scrub and red earth, past bronze plaques showing the Mysteries of the Rosary, to the spot where the visionaries say they saw the Virgin.

Wear proper shoes; the rocks are sharp and many pilgrims still slip. The climb takes about thirty minutes, slower for those praying the rosary on the way up. Quietest at dawn, when the light comes up over the plain and you can sometimes have the summit to yourself. A wooden cross marks the apparition spot; a smaller white statue of the Virgin stands a little below.

A story
On 24 June 1981, six teenagers from Bijakovici reported seeing a glowing figure on this hillside. They later described it as the Virgin Mary, who -- according to two of the visionaries -- has appeared to them daily ever since. The Vatican has not officially recognised the apparitions but Pope Francis authorised pilgrimages here in 2019.
