Cross Mountain (Krizevac)

The 520-metre hill behind the village, topped by a vast concrete cross that catches the light from miles away. The climb takes about two hours, sometimes more, along a rough stony path that twists between rocks and scrub.

Fourteen bronze stations of the cross stand at intervals along the route, and many pilgrims pray each one. The summit gives a long view across the plain to the Croatian hills. Wear hiking shoes -- the path is steep, the loose rock unforgiving -- and bring water, sun protection, and a head torch if you climb in the dark to be at the summit for sunrise.

A story
Villagers built the 14-metre concrete cross in 1934 to mark the 1,900th anniversary of the death of Christ. They carried the sand and gravel on their backs up the rocky path because no road existed. The cross is said to contain a relic of the True Cross sent from Rome to mark the achievement.
