Šarena Džamija (Multi-Coloured Mosque)

The Šarena Džamija (Multi-Coloured Mosque), built in 1757, is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans — and one of the most unusual. The exterior walls are covered in elaborate painted floral motifs in red, blue, and gold, creating an effect unlike any other mosque in the region. The carved woodwork of the interior is equally exceptional.

The mosque sits near the centre of the old bazaar quarter and is easily found. Non-Muslim visitors may be permitted to enter outside prayer times if respectfully dressed; check with whoever is at the gate. The painted exterior is the main visual attraction and can be seen from outside. Early morning light brings out the colours most clearly.

A story
The mosque is one of only two in Bosnia and Herzegovina where the prayer hall is located on the upper floor, with the ground floor historically used for commerce — a practical arrangement that reflects Travnik's dual identity as both a religious centre and a major trading town. The building also reportedly stores hairs of the Prophet Muhammad, making it an object of particular veneration.
