Sahat Kula (Clock Tower)

18th-century Ottoman clock tower on a small rise above the centre

A stone Ottoman clock tower of the kind found across Bosnia, built in the 18th century to ring the hours for the mosques and bazaar below. It stands on a small bluff a short climb from the main pedestrian street, and the brief detour gives a partial view across the river valley.

The clock face has been replaced more than once; the masonry is the original. Sahat Kulas were status symbols for prosperous Ottoman towns, and Zenica's confirms that the place was a recognised market centre well before the steelworks arrived.
