Mehana Bai Vito

Traditional Bulgarian tavern near the Varosha quarter serving grilled meats and local wine

A traditional Bulgarian mehana (tavern) on the edge of the Varosha quarter, Bai Vito is the kind of place that has been feeding local families and university students for decades. The menu centres on Bulgarian grilled meats — kebapche, kavarma, and whatever is fresh from the grill — served with village bread, shopska salad, and local wine or rakia.

The setting is properly atmospheric: rough-hewn wooden furniture, low ceilings, and photographs of old Blagoevgrad on the walls. In summer, there is outdoor seating under a vine-covered terrace. Prices are very low by any Western standard. This is not a tourist-facing restaurant; it is the real thing, and it rewards a visit.
