Day Trips from Blagoevgrad

Blagoevgrad's position in the Struma valley makes it an excellent base for day trips. To the northeast, Rila Monastery is the standout excursion — Bulgaria's most important religious site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reachable in under an hour by car or on the morning public bus. To the southeast, Bansko and the Pirin National Park offer hiking in summer and skiing in winter. The Melnik wine region lies 80 km south, combining Bulgaria's smallest town with its best red wines and surreal sandstone landscape.

All three day trips can be done in a full day from Blagoevgrad; a car makes them easier, though public transport connects to most.
