The student population from AUBG and South-West University gives Blagoevgrad a more active bar scene than most Bulgarian cities of its size. The action concentrates along Makedonia Boulevard and the streets around it, with a secondary cluster near the AUBG campus.
Cafés open early and serve as all-day working spaces for students; bars come alive after 10pm, especially Thursday through Saturday. Beer prices are low — local lager is the default, though craft beer has found a foothold. The outdoor terraces along the pedestrian boulevard are the social heart of the city in summer.
