The Regional Historical Museum of Blagoevgrad covers the history of the southwestern Bulgarian region from Thracian times through the Bulgarian national awakening and into the 20th century. The collection spans archaeology, ethnography, and the revolutionary period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the Macedonian Question dominated Balkan politics.
The museum occupies a building in the centre of town and is one of the better regional museums in Bulgaria. Particularly strong on the ethnographic side: traditional textiles, costumes, and crafts from the Pirin and Struma valley area, as well as exhibits on the April Uprising of 1876 and the revolutionary committees that prepared the ground for Bulgarian independence. The Macedonian revolutionary Gotse Delchev, who is something of a local hero, features prominently.
